PANO CRU
solo show at Atelier da Graça, Lisbon, 2022
“Pano Cru is a reflection of Tiago Hesp’s thoughts and his approach to the world and life in general. Based on the assumption of deconstruction as a mental process of interpreting the stimuli that surround you, Tiago Hesp's work often (but not always) takes on an abstract form; Being very personal, the body of work we see here is perhaps some of the artist's most “inaccessible”.
Tiago Hesp paints to try to resolve himself as a human being in the world, in a permanent attempt to find the balance of having a place that is only his own. Always starting from the dark – reflected in the permanent black line, in the aggressiveness of its application – his canvases are an attempt to resolve and balance the various forces that affect him, in a battle in which the self and the I meet and compete, seeking soften yourself in some middle ground between the black and the target, looking for something of the comfort of normality that we find in others.
At the beginning of Tiago Hesp's work is fear, the fear of failing, and in this way Tiago Hesp's artistic process, using collage, the use of different layers of information, as well as here in particular Pano Cru, are a defense; a defense against oneself, where the exercise of control over the black self takes place using the rawness of materials so as not to eliminate the beauty of the target self; the artist takes risks and the process gradually becomes an exercise in personal liberation and ordering chaos.
The result is a work that wants us to enter into the eye; a work where we feel it is possible to go inside and feel every line, every trace, every imbalance, every color, thus immersing ourselves in a parallel universe that transports us to an alternative emotional reality that puts us in direct contact with the “monsters” that live in all of us."
